Watched my sister's keeper today. It was pretty intense, they sure weren't joking when they say it's a tearjerker. From father-daughter, sister-brother, sister-sister, boy-girl, it had all those precious moments that make you cry and smile at the same time.
I'm always a sucker for father-daughter relationships, but this time I was especially touched by the love story between the leukemia-stricken kate and the cancer-hottie taylor. Their love story was touching in a very pragmatic, tragic way. Akin to R&J. The waiting room scene he picked her up just made me smile. So usual but so unique!
Taylor Ambrose: I'm Taylor. ACL.
Kate Fitzgerald: I'm Kate. APL.
Taylor Ambrose: Oh, a rarity.
They had their own special thing from going through such a painful disease and it was a bond borne out of adversity and loneliness and hope. It was so sweet how he helped her and joked with her as she barfed upon her first chemo session.
Then there's Cameron Diaz was awesome as the fighting-against-all-odds mother who just wouldn't let her girl die cos she just couldn't let go. Made you get so mad with her singlemindedness but at the same time understand her love and hope against all hope for her baby.
And I can't even begin to describe Abigail Breslin who's yet again done another tour-de-force little girl who copes with adversity and shows maturity beyond her years. This girl is pretty special, ever since her star turn in Lil Miss Sunshine she's gone from strength to strength. I was always a big fan and thought highly of Dakota Fanning but this girl just blows her out of the water with her depth. She's amazing and endearing in the same instance.
The casting was really spot on throughout and the dad and the brother Jessie were good too, if peripheral. Not to forget Joan Cusack and the ever-enigmatic Alec Baldwin as the hotshot lawyer (91% success rate! Haha) It was a superb ensemble that just elevated this to another level.
And I really love it when a story tugs at your heartstrings, logic and conscience in different directions and this one did it with aplomb. Everyone had their own agenda which was just as justified as the other and it was a great tale how everyone has their own take of the "right" thing to do. Importantly though it just hit home the fact that everyone has their own happiness, and only when they accepted what Kate wanted did everything fall in to place. So let everyone have their own happiness, then let everything flow.
Everyone deserves their own happiness, whatever it is.
I live by that.
