One of the first players to get the dreaded call was Theo Walcott, who was on the golf course when Don Fabio informed him of his surprise exclusion. The following is a transcript of that phone call.

Walcott: Hello?

Capello: Theo, I have some bad news.

Walcott: What? Oh no, I didn't make the squad?!

Capello: No no, I'm making you captain.

Walcott: For real?!

Capello: Ha ha no, not for real. I'm leaving you at home.

Walcott: So you're not making me captain?

Capello: Ha ha no. You're not even in the team.

Walcott: Why would you play a joke like that? That's so mean.

Capello: Hey, I have to make seven of these calls. I have to keep myself entertained.

Walcott: But what about my feelings?

Capello: What about them?

Walcott: That kind of joke is cruel.

Capello: Well, you can cry about it while you're sitting at home for the next month.

Walcott: I can't believe this.

Capello: Oh, Theo, one more thing...

Walcott: Yeah?

Capello: Is your refrigerator running?

[Walcott hangs up.]
